Life upon the wicked stage ain’t ever what a girl supposes

This week I spoke with the Professional Speakers Association on life in the profession, which I named the title of this piece: Life upon the wicked stage ain’t ever what a girl supposes. For those of you younger than Ronald Reagan, you may not recognise that this is a song from the musical ‘Showboat’ by Oscar Hammerstein. My mother used to sing it quite a bit, the basic tenet being that things are never what they appear. Ain’t that the truth.

In the real world, one of the questions I get asked quite often is whether I am now full-time on TV. Ha Ha. In reality, I do about 5 minutes every month or so.

I have a friend who also tells me I am ‘living the dream’, which, from the airport lounge, where I sit now for a late flight from Melbourne to Sydney, doesn’t feel very dreamlike.

In reality, my LinkedIn Live didn’t connect this morning, my one-hour coaching turned into a four-hour coaching last night and I have raced to Sydney for a TV that isn’t happening. OK, I am in Sydney, for other things too, but I hate plan changes. Sometimes it feels like this:

“Cleaning the kitchen but saw the laundry so I watered the plants and now I’m making a dentist appointment.”

Amongst other debacles, somehow, in amongst all that, I have created a Showreel and the internal voices start:

  • Why do I do my hair like that?
  • Why are all the photos with the same outfit?
  • I hate my voice! (Have you ever met anyone who loves the sound of their own voice?)
  • Can I let it go out with that music!
  • Is the message there?
  • Is that the right closing slide and why didn’t I lose weight before considering producing anything!!!!

Ok, on the plane now. The show goes on.  I am madly writing an article and just discovered Mel Robbins is coming to Australia at the same time as my workshops in March, so we have to deal with that.

In the end, we are all doing our best! . . . you, me and everyone else.

Keep powering!

Enjoy the showreel and let me know your thoughts.

PS Don’t tell me I’m fat. I’ve lost 4 kilos!
