Face your fear. Take Action!

Face your fear. Take Action!

As many of us are finishing our summer holidays and kickstarting the year with resolutions, we’re also reflecting on change and what it will mean for us.

Sometimes we look at change positively. More often, fear holds us back.

Eyes set on steering larger initiatives? Aiming to leave a lasting impact in boardroom discussions? Seeking more opportunities to lead industry dialogues or speak at events?

If so, the key to success lies in one crucial skill: confident, effective communication.

As Cicero once said in De Oratore:

“For what is more admirable than to be able to control, by the power of speech, the minds of men, to instill new impulses, to modify others, to extinguish those that are harmful, and to strengthen those that are beneficial?”

"For what is more admirable than to be able to control, by the power of speech, the minds of men, to instill new impulses, to modify others, to extinguish those that are harmful, and to strengthen those that are beneficial?"

In our fast-paced, attention-centric era, being seen, heard and remembered is critical. Don’t let fear be your barrier.

So how can you stop it from holding you back?

Take action.

What is the one thing you can do that will help you grow your executive influence and presence?

Decide to do that thing and practise it until the change becomes habitual.

Then tackle the next thing. And the next!

Cicero did not become a great communicator in a day. The ancient Greek and Roman leaders were people devoted to oratory, building trust and respect known as gravitas. They worked on their skills over a lifetime with constant application to achieve excellence.

Seeds of Optimism

I love this image. Originally posted by Spanish Commentator and cartoonist, Jose Maria Nieto in 2017, it pops up from year to year.

“I don’t see any reason to be optimistic. What do you think the new year will bring us?”

“I believe it will bring flowers.”

“Really? Why?”

“Because I am planting flowers.”

It’s a reminder that while things around us may seem out of control, we are able to influence the world around us. I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing about the change you create this year.
