On my recent retreat, it was wonderful to share the glasses through which I view the world. It is so gorgeous to hear everyone gasp when they see what I see and hear what I hear, and then they begin to make changes in what they do. It’s life-changing for everyone, and it’s so rewarding for me to watch it all happen. It’s the juice of motivation.
Now I am getting messages from participants saying, “I don’t believe it, Louise. I see it everywhere now”. Bingo. These tiny little flicks make a huge difference. So, here is one of those tricks.
Have you ever noticed how the minute attention is turned towards you, you quickly throw your eyes to the floor and back up?
Everyone does it (except psychopaths) if you have not been taught otherwise.
We tend to do this when we begin a presentation, answer a question at the meeting table or walk on stage.
And why we flick the eyes to this low position has been analysed as possibly meaning you are uncomfortable with the position. Really!! It’s not a rocket science.
Socially, this could mean submission or shyness, which may be hugely important on a date, but this is most likely not a date.
Professionally, this has two negative impacts.
Firstly, It may also trigger an internal conversation of negative thinking. This is not helpful.
Secondly, it sends a message to anyone watching that you are anxious about the situation. This is not a good start.
The benefits of keeping your eyes up are to look confident and also, surprising to many, you feel confident and in control.
The process of change is to
-
Realise you do it
Understand why it is not a great thing to do
Notice when you do it
Practice not doing it
Practice further until you can’t get it wrong
Watch out for this habit in others and definitely try, with discipline, to remove it from what you do.
Keep your eyes up and forward, and join me at my next event to learn more.
Let me hear your thoughts.
